Challenges

Ritchie Brothers, an international Auctioneering company, needed a permanent facility in Northern California. The project site consisted of approximately 90 acres of farmland. Bird Creek crossed the property creating two separate parts, that are not connected except by using the county road. The project needed to maximize the amount of available space for storing equipment to be auctioned. There were three main buildings: Auction and Administration Building, Truck Check-in Building, and the Refurbishing Building. The site had limited access to water and wastewater facilities. A portion of the project near Bird Creek fell within the 100-year flood zone. Another requirement was to add improvements to a nearby intersection.

Solution

Laugenour and Meikle provided the topographic survey and construction staking services, site improvement plans, coordination with other design consultants, and intersection improvements. Improvements included two flatbed railroad car bridges crossing Bird Creek, a 250,000 gallon water tank and pump to meet fire flow requirements, two runoff detention ponds, and an on-site wastewater treatment facility. The west side of the county road was widened with new curb, gutter and sidewalks.  The intersection was improved by adding a left turn lane and the first signal lights in rural Yolo County.

Outcome

The completed site meets the requirements of our client and multiple governmental agencies. Ritchie Bros. currently has four auctions per year at this site.
